Can I tell you how I write one of these posts?
It usually goes like this:
I start by realizing, "Oh, crap! It's Wednesday!" though the word "Blog" is often written and circled on my to do list somewhere.
Then I open my photos because I forgot all the things I wanted to tell you about, and I just hope there's photos of something interesting. Haha!
I pick out one or a few photos depending on my luck, and think about which one to tell you about first.
And then I begin.
Today, let's start with the proudest of all moments.
On Monday morning, as we were getting ready to hop on my ebike to go to school, Braeden said, "I'm going to ride my bike."
Braeden despises climbing hills on his bike, so I doubted his ability to make it on time (or at all) as it was already 8am.
"Uhhh, no you're not," I said plainly and honestly.
"Yup!" he declared, grabbing his bike and throwing a leg over.
I tried to explain to him that he never made that journey before, and the roads had hills and we should practice first, but he wasn't having any of it. "Okay then," I decided. "Let's go."
Oh me of little faith. I figured that wherever he decided to bail, he could just hop on my bike like our original plan, and I'd pick up his bike -- wherever it would be -- on the way home. We could do that.
But that little stinker, he rode all the way to school. It's almost a mile! I had to ride close to keep him safe, and it was terrifying (we now take a different route), but he did it!
He did it!
What a big guy.
There he is after a triumphant bike drop. Bam!
Then he takes off his helmet and we walk in to meet his aid for the morning, but today it was a group of his classmate girls! I love how they love him! Then I bungee his bike to the back of my bike and slowly roll home. We did this three days in a row now.
I don't know how many parents would do that, but I will do that for him. As long as he makes it the whole way without calling too many things "stupid," (I get it. It's frustrating,) then he can keep riding. I'm so so so so proud of that little guy.
He'll be 10 next week!
Okay, now we can talk about my and Esa's adventures! I should say that Brady goes to Copper Harbor to see his dad's family on the weekends (though this is the last one for the season), so Esa and I get to do fun spontaneous adventures. It's pretty rad. Soon enough, Brady will be with us for those as well.
Two weekends ago we finally, and I can't believe I need to say finally, but we finally paddled Lake Medora! It was awesome!
We launched at the main parking area and skirted counter-clockwise to the lake's inlet on the northeast side.
There's us in the inlet!
Then we fought the wind for a mile and hopped onto one of the three main islands. Probably the closest one on the way back.
Here we are on that island looking south-ish. What an amazing day on the water! I'm so glad we got out there before summer ended. It's been pretty windy lately.
Last weekend Esa mentioned the Bailey hike. I had no idea what he meant, but he drove us here.
We were amazed at this hike. For one, it starts in a cedar bog -- one of my favorite environments. I'm not going to tell you all about it. You should just go there.
There's me hiking through a grassy section of cedars. So lovely.
Lots of moss, cedars, squat balsams and a couple springs. What a cool spot.
Then I saw this patch of pipsissewa. Now, I hadn't seen any of that the whole time until we raised slightly in elevation. Then we saw thimbleberry plants as we got higher.
I don't even remember what some of the other plants were along the way because I was panting as we went straight up the side of this ridge. Approximately 600 feet up. Just up.
I tried not to get to ornery, but neither one of us expected that!
We were hoping for a view. It wasn't terrible. This one is facing south toward Delaware. We saw a glimpse of Lake Superior facing north, of course.
You'll have to pick out the ridge in the distance. It was so colorful!
And the way back down was awesome. Ha!
Okay, that's the gist of our adventures.
If you want to know a couple of my Aha moments while living in town, you can listen to this podcast episode. It's a bit rambly, but it's genuine.
I love doing that podcast. I sure hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Not that I am running low on ideas for it, but if you have one, I'd love to hear it.
You take care, and make sure you're making room for something fun or goofy or adventurous or new in your day. Don't take life too seriously.
